Maryanne with her Pflaumenkuchen

There is only a bare bones kitchen in the IBZ, but Maryanne found some excellent plums at the market and turned them into a true pflaumenkuchen. We sat on our balcony and had an echt deutsch Kaffeestunde.

In Strasbourg, Cynthia took me to a sort of bar-like place for tarte flambe (sp?) which also had a German name that sounded like flam-kuchen. In Strasbourg, it was definitely savoury--with bits of cheese, bacon, tomato, and/or onion--more like pizza with very thin crust and minimalist topping. Maryanne's Pflaumenkuchen definitely looks like a sweet. Am I confusing two German words--Pflaumen and whatever the word was that they were saying in Stasbourg?

Hi Barbara, you are correct, Flammkuchen are different than Pfaumenkuchen, although the pronunciation is similar. The latter are a sweet cake, topped with lots of fresh plum slices and cinnamon and sugar. Flammkuchen are savory, and served traditionally with new wine. It's new wine season, but I'm not sure if it's this year's harvest or last year's. At any rate, Don and I have tasted it, without Flammkuchen sad to say, and it's a little like a wine cooler -- fizzy, fruity and sweet. Very yeasty, as it is still fermenting, and arrives in a bottle with a loose screw top, rather than a cork.
