Which sex is your brain?
This BBC quiz was one of Kottke's links of the year for 2006 and isn't as flaky as it sounds. Some questions in it are the type you find in the Myers Briggs personality sorter tests; others are problems to solve that involve 3d geometries. There are also some empathy tests where you have to make an inference of emotion from a pair of eyes in a photograph. Jean and I veer toward our actual sexes, although in differing degrees. Here's his result:
He is officially an average male. And here's mine:
I was relieved to see that despite the "female" diagnosis, I still performed best in the spatial skill tests (whew, given my vocation!) and very, very badly in the section where you had to read emotional states from pairs of eyes. I was off the charts even for men on that, while Jean had top marks...
Click ---> HERE <--- if you're interested in trying it. It takes around twenty minutes to go through the whole thing. Please share your results if you do it! Kottke himself is apparently dead center on the spectrum.

The link is not there! I think this is it
Thanks for the link, Elizabeth - I love these types of things! I scored the same as Jean - how odd! Scored 100% on the spatial rotation section, and performed horribly on the "Spot the Difference" and "Empathy" sections!
Thanks for contributing the actual link! I've now corrected it in the post too. How interesting that you're the average male too--you certainly don't look the part! I was good at spot the difference, but according to the results of the empathy section, I have a touch of Asberger's syndrome...
Well, I just took this test and turned out to be exactly in the middle, veering neither toward one side or the other but presumably combining the best of both sides. Or is it the worst of both sides? I prefer to interpret the results in the former direction!
If you're looking for empathy, don't come to me! I finally got a chance to take this test and my overall score was like Don's, right in the middle and, as he said, combining the best of both sides!!!
Yay for comments! I'm so interested by this lack-of-empathy trend in our gene pool. Has anyone at all gotten high marks for empathy?
