A German Museum Wins Top Architecture Prize

Britain's most prestigious architecture prize was awarded Saturday (Oct. 6) to Germany's Museum of Modern Literature, a classically influenced building of concrete, stone and wood.
The panel of judges for the Stirling Prize called the Museum of Modern Literature, located in Marbach in southwest Germany, "a small Acropolis" overlooking the Neckar River valley.
They described the museum, completed in 2006, as "simultaneously rich and restrained" and praised the architects for delivering style on a relatively small budget of about 12 million euros ($17 million). "This is a remarkably low-cost building in a high-cost country," said the panel of judges.

Praising the subtly lit room holding the museum's permanent collection, the panel said there was "a particular theatricality about this space, as though the reflections, refractions and multiple shadows from the small intense lights collectively represent the soul of the German imagination."

More than 1,300 objects, including letters, documents and personal items from famous 20th century authors, are on exhibit at the museum. It houses Friedrich Nietzsche's death mask and original manuscripts including Franz Kafka's "The Trial" and Alfred Doblin's "Berlin Alexanderplatz."

The $40,000 Stirling Prize is presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The winner must be a RIBA member, but the building can be anywhere in the European Union. The award is named after architect Sir James Stirling, who died in 1992.

Dresden's renovated train station, the Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal, and the America's Cup building in Valencia, Spain were also in the running for this year's Stirling Prize.

Previous winners of the prize, now in its 12th year, include the Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh and a cigar-shaped 40-story glass skyscraper in London popularly known as the "Gherkin." (Deutsche Welle/wire reports)

Thanks for some great links, Dad. This will provide some good study material for our trip next month! Here's a link to some photos and other coverage of the museum, which looks pretty cool.
